Hi next year I want to grow my courgette's in containers rather than in the ground at the allotment has anyone done this before and if so what are the results. What size of container and where to purchase them????

Yes it is possible..but you need to be keen with watering can as courgettes will need lots of moisture to be success in containers...and you need large container to be able keep the soil moist enough reasonably long time without needing to water and feed everyday.

Look for containers that are at least a bucket size or even larger would be better. Wilko sell 'potato' planters, made with tarpaulin like material that would be good size for the job.
If you have compost pile/bin..you could plant one or two on top of that depending how big your compost bin is. Courgettes will looove all the goodness that it can draw out from the compost..even if the pile is not properly rotted down yet, you can make shallow planting holes add some soil and/or bought compost for you plants to start its life in.

Here is my courgette plants growing in compost bins last year..[attachment=1]..even that size 'planters' weren't too big!

I grew courgettes on strawbales last year.  Two to a bale. They did  very well except the ones next to the bales on the leaward side did better.  It was very dry last year so they needed a lot of watering.

They grow very well in compost daleks, but they need to be very full to ensure the plant gets enough light for the first few weeks.  I found the compost settled, I thought it might have been because the courgette extracted water from the compost.

I also think that they do not like a lot of wind on the leaves so the higher up they are the more they will need protecting.  I used plastic bottles with a cane through them.
