Allotments 4 All

With all this wet and cool mild weather I was wondering if it will be a good year for field mushrooms and other edible fungi? Haven't seen any FM yet although it might be a bit early? Anyone had a chance for a forage?

It should be a very good one

We have had a few field mushrooms already dotted around the allotment

I've heard people have been picking their first chanterelles and ceps..but I haven't come across many yet.
I saw odd cep myself last week..but they were still very small and I managed to run mower over before spotting them.. ::)
I shall make efford soon and start foraging..the weather certainly is very promising for good a crop..might as well as allotment won't provide much this year.. ::)

We have mushrooms everywhere this year..they even did a T report on them as there where so many.

Goody, I'll keep a look out, love 'shrooms, though I only ever seem to pick field mushies, I really should be more adventuous!
When I was having a quick look today I noticed a damson tree with loads of fruit on, bet it gets raided before they are ripe  ;D

You can buy mushroom spawn, impregnated on grain.  You can lift a turf and put it underneath.  The come up very erratically.  They do not like weedkillers etc etc. I  did it many years ago and the pop up occasionally in the lawn when you least expect them.

It is not cheap and I found results are very iffy. Fothergills have quite a good range,  they do not charge p&p on seeds and you get extra free seeds.

I know they are not field mushrooms but if you have a mushroom farm near you, blag some of their used mushroom compost. It makes a good soil improver, plus a free crop of mushers. I sieved a load into the orchard grass for a top dressing years ago and got a crop for a few years. I still get the odd two or three pop up.

Thanks, I don't know of any mushroom growers in the area but I'll see if I can locate one.
