Allotments 4 All

I managed in the spring to (finally) graft a successful graft of my MIL's unknown cooking apple onto both rootstock and a Discovery apple tree from focus. The one on the tree is at my allotment the problem is I was so busy matching the size's of stem together the grafted piece is on the end of a branch (don't know what I was thinking!!!) it could be accidentally pruned off at the moment. However I could easily make the grafted on branch the leader by removing the current leader. The main leader on this tree has already gone and the top lateral is now the leader my grafted branch is the next one down. Would this work ok?

Tie a yellow ribbon etc,   to remind you not to prune that branch.    I'm envyous of your grafting sucess.       Cheers,      Tony.     

Hi , Well done on your sucessful grafting. Pruning out your leader would be fine it should make your grafted branch take up the mantle. See what happens once it is the dominant branch.

Once I've grown some more material I can graft again on to the rootstocks that didn't take. I just hope someone is good at grafting fingers back on, I think the blood that washed over the graft must have helped as I nearly removed my finger grafting the successful one.

Ha ha the hazzards of gardeneing, i just pruned and tied in a rambling rose with blood soaked twine!
