What are the measurements Gavin? You'll soon knock that into shape. I'm about to PM you ;D.

gavinjconway

Size is 5mt wide x 22 mt long useable growing space. It is a half plot so still quite adequate... if I was to get the other half i'll do fruit, berries and asparagus etc that take up space..

It's not too bad; you've got patches of perennial weeds which need to be exterminated with extreme prejudice, but plenty of bare ground between; you're not overrrun with couch or bindweed or any of the other real nasties. The size is quite manageable as well.

gavinjconway

Yep - it's quite manageable and no nasties to get rid.. it does have some bare patches as you say so not too bad a condition to repair!! There is a bit of mares tail so will have to work on that.. Any good remedies?

Keep on top of that marestail.............it is the enemy :)

antipodes

That is the same size as mine :-) You will be able to do what you say and more. I have fruit, just not too much, but about 20 strawberry plants, raspberries and 3 rhubarb, plus artichokes, plus all the rest! :)
It doesn't look too bad and anyway everything will start to die off soon. Chop and manure and cover then get in your garlic in October and start planning for spring while digging bit by bit and re-covering over winter. Come spring, uncover bit by bit and it will be a doddle.
2012 - Snow in February, non-stop rain till July. Blight and rot are rife. Thieving voles cause strife. But first runner beans and lots of greens. Follow an English allotment in urban France: http://roos-and-camembert.blogspot.com

Re :Mares tail or Horse tail. I believe that it doesn't like a well fed ground. Mine seem to be getting less and less each year, but I do cut and pull a lot. Using knife I cut below ground as far as I can. You can actually use mairs tail as a fed if you put it in water and leave it to rot for about 2weeks.

Hi Willsy - thanks for the info - I read it somewhere as well. I will endeavour to get rid of it in time !!
