In my local market, one of the fruit and veg stalls sells these grey large slightly flater pumpkins by the pound, (cuts them up) can anyone advise which variety this may be, and if they are worth growing?

Is that in France?
Generally the grey/blue pumpkins are very good eaters : I am growing Queensland Blue which are greyish and they are excellent. most people also like Crown Prince which is similar, or if you find them the Australian Jarrahdale is very good.
Here in Nantes we get a lot of potimarron, the Rouge d'Etampes which are good eating pumpkins and grow readily here. LAst year I grew good butternuts here but didn't get them to germinate this year.
2012 - Snow in February, non-stop rain till July. Blight and rot are rife. Thieving voles cause strife. But first runner beans and lots of greens. Follow an English allotment in urban France: http://roos-and-camembert.blogspot.com

I am actually in Wales, but the pumpkins are very large and have pronounced "ribs" and are grey and labelled as french pumpkin. I am looking to grow a grey/blue variety next year, as I have been told that they have good flavour, better than the usual orange ones.

Sounds like the ones sold in Birmingham Market that the stallholder calls Chinese pumpkins, looked very much like Crown Prince.  Asked for a couple of seeds but was told n no uncertain terms that if I
wanted a couple of seeds, I had to buy a piece of pumpkin.  At a £1 per slice and the ones I had on the lottie were a lot bigger than hers.

does it have a light orange coloured skin? The ridge description sounds a bit like a Sucrine De berry. they sell slices of them in supermarkets in France.

Most pumpkins sold in French supermarkets is Musquée de Provence(skin orange-brown).You are lucky if they sell Sucrine du Berry in your area!!!

I just looked up Sucrine du Berry and it looks like a sort of butternut ???
The french aren't real good with pumpkin although the rouge Vif d'Etampes is good.
AM pleased because while looking that up I stumbled on a French site that sells cheaper seeds! And tehy have at least 15 pumpkin varieties! woo hoo! Will go back there for a good browse!
