Allotments 4 All

 I planted a chillie plant in my greenhouse which has produced lots of green chillies that I was waiting to turn red, they are not long (like on the picture) but very short chillies and they are turning yellow. The plant picture shows long red chillies. Have I done something wrong here or can chillies be yellow and the plant was labeled wrong. Can you also tell me how I freeze chillies if these prove to be edible. Thanks

Hi! Although chillies change colour during their ripening - green to red for instance - I don't think that, due to the size you're also indicating, these aren't the ones you thought you'd bought.

As to freezing - easy-peasy. Harvest them, put in a freezer bag, in the freezer - and that's it. I harvest loads at this time of year and they last til the next season. They go soggy when you de-frost, but I always chop them while they're still frozen before using. In time they'll lose their heat a little, but easy to adjust the amount you use. And I wished I'd known all this years ago when I was buying fresh chillies in the winter for 69p for 3 :o

Thank you for your help, I have tried one and it was very hot,so will get them in the freezer ready for the winter.

I deseed and chop them up before freezing just find it easier when cooking in a hurry - wear latex gloves when doing it and still feel the heat in my fingers!

Yellow is a wierd colour for red chillies to go. It normally goes dark green then kind of purple then red. If they are ripening to yellow than it probably is a different variaety.

I dont freeze mine i thread them onto strings in the house they look wonderful and the drying increases the heat (becuase you lose the water). They make lovely decorations and you can then make packets of them for presents

What variety did the label say they were?

You sometimes get yellow ones in "Carribean Blend"...  :-X
I have one which is virtually white... but has no "heat" to speak of...
I have some red "Bhatt Jalokia" too but don't think they are fit for human consumption...  :P

The label said they were red chillies with a picture of them.

Chillies do outcross and mutate a fair bit, it's likely that you've got one or the other.... I've found that if I grow a dozen or so plants I can guarantee at least one will be a bit wierd..... this year it's one of the Apaches.... it's a tiny plant compared to all others.... but it's making lots of little chuillies so I'm not fussed....
