It's a Pumpkin. An Atlantic Giant.....

Now, I had assumed, going by a great number of years of sloppy observation of the plants I've grown, that it would head South-West, after the setting sun, kind of...
So I made a tunnel thingy that runs from North-East to South-West and planted the thing in the NE end.... And of course, it's heading directly for the Atlantic... North.

Stupid Pumpkin, or stupid gardener?

Just turn it round and put it in the direction you want it to go XX Jeannine

The pumpkin doesn't just have one runner, a plant may appear as the hub of a radiating spread of runners,  NOTE, these runners have auxiliary roots so bury them and feed as well as the main root fo a BIGUN !   Cheers.  Cheers,  Tony.

Hmmmm.. I can't turn it around, it's been in the ground for a couple of weeks now... Leaves bigger than dinner-plates...

Kleftiwallah (Tony),
Do tell me more!  :)  Should I pinch out the growing tip and bury the whole runner?
I understand what you mean about the plant being a 'hub' of the radiating runners. Good description that.
I'll wait for the next one to develop then I assume... and hope this one figures out which way's South.

When you plant out your pumpkins....

See the 2 seed leaves, and then the next leaf. The plant will grow in the opposite direction to the way the first true leaf grows. So plant that pointing north and your pumpkin should grow south.

*this was told to me 3 years ago and 99% of the time it works....every now and then an awkward plant won't grow that way but I've used it to grow them along my paths and the principle works most of the time.

I like this tip, not something I was aware of and will try it out when I plant mine. Thanks
