I am terrible at shoe horning things in.  Just planted out some quite bit runner bean plants and realised because there were bit that I put them some considerable distance.  I would be interested in what people think is their optimum.

I would plant out at around 9" in my raised beds..

Many thanks for your replay Nick I though I would have a whole host of different answers to choose from.  I think everyone was busy yesterday.

I put mine in 12 inches apart 10 canes to a wigwam only because its the way i remember my father planting his,a lot of people on our site put theres closer together and all do very well.

I tend to get too many leaves and not enough beans so I am wondering if a great distance would help.  Though having said that some were dripping last year.

I grow on a Munty frame and my twine is tied 10cm apart; and I grow 2 french beans up each.

Hello all.

I have spaced my canes for the french beans 6" apart and today I was going to put the plants in at one per cane. Should I be doing two per cane?

I think that the number of plants per can of french beans might depend on the variiety.  A brute of a plant like Mrs Lewis's purple podded might not take kindly to a bed fellow sharing its space.

I tend to give mine one each.

I plant four per cane; if they start crowding each other out, I can always pinch some out!
