Allotments 4 All

Hello all
Ive been sowing northern extra sweet sweetcorn and they have germinated but then split at the bottom so that there are two uprights rather than one.

Before i take them all off  just wanted to check that to leave them would be to have two weaker stems rather than one strong one. Anyone else have this happen?

Normally sweetcorn develop side shoots from the base but not until the main stem is well developed, these you can leave they will not affect the plants or the cobs.
Doing so at this early in their growth is new to me maybe it's because of the variety.

the sideshoots are called tillers. I always get them with minipops. they're a sign that the plants have lots of nutrients, and are getting lots of light - possibly planted a bit far apart, but no problem

you leave the side shoot unless you want to decrease yield and possible damage the roots of your corn.
