Allotments 4 All

Can anyone recomend a decent variety? I grew alpine strawberries last year but they were way too fiddly, I'd prefer a perpetual type unless anyone can convince me otherwise, cheers

I love strawbs, but couldn't reccomend a perpetual one.

Have grown both Cambridge Favourite and Florence last year. Both are yummy. Tried Symphony at a Pick your own farm last year too, and I think they were the best flavoured strawbs I've ever had. Also bought a few honeyoe to try this year.

Marshmellow is good, and not at all like marshmallow.

maxim is the new kind im trying- gives huge crops and meant to be tasty too.

Hi there Merry Tiller, I grow Calypso, they are a perpetual strawberry and crop almost from June to October.  Last year the runners were so vigerous that as they were running from the main plant they were fruiting at the same time..

where is the best place to obtain Calypso? We really want to try to grow a few strawberries, even if only in our garden.

Thanks for the replies, I have had a look around and there isn't much choice at the moment but I found Calypso on the Unwins Direct website so Calypso it is.
Strange thing is I got a tap on the door this morning and the postie handed me a parcel of Maxim strawberry plants, I don't remember ordering them at all, does eating too many chili's damage the memory? :-\

Hi All,
I bought some strawberry seeds in Gran Canaria airport last september, when I got home I sowed them in an 18 cell tray (one seed only in most of the pots) and out of those, I got 17 seedlings of which I then potted into bigger pots as they grew. I have just planted them out into my lottie last week and I must say they look very healthy indeed, bearing in mind they got no special attention in an un- heated  greenhouse exposed to the elements at times when I lost glass in the gales we had. One of the plants has flowers on already, but I am in two minds as to pinch them off or leave and see what happens.
I think the variety is called Rubi, but not sure as it's all in Spanish, so I don't know when they're supposed to fruit or what they taste like. Only time will tell.
