Hi, I have sorted out what I want for this year and have room for about 7 more..I have the following growing, the surplus are going out as transplants for work parties on the gardens.

I can't decide which to grow in that extra bit of greenhouse space. Some have got to go.

Can you help me decide.

I have just one of each of the following left. I know the descriptions on all of them but some I have never personally grown so would appreciate the imput. Yeild is a considereation as the fruit will go to the food bank.

Never heard of any of those.

In the UK we have several which are favourites and produce decent large or cherry type tomatoes. They suit our climate, usually grown under glass.

Generally whilst we might grow a 'new one' to try. Plum or beef eater types even those with a variating colour.

At the end of the day it is personal choice, which is, for the experienced grower  to grow the proven variety.

Ace
Alicante
Gardener's Delight
Money Maker

are probably among the most prefered

Yes we all like to try out something new but fall back on those which prove their worth for our less than kind environment for their growing.

Jeannine you are the tomato (and squash) queen!! Why ask us mere mortals for advice? Go with your instincts and what you know already!! Lovely to be consulted but quite frankly I haven't a clue.  :) :)

except - Moneymaker is bad (Cleo says so and I trust his judgment!  ;))

Jeannine

Sorry you two, I didn't mean to tease. Many of these were started by another gardenerer , they turned up in the gardens greenhouse as a donation to supplement the ones I am growing for the cause.

I was so busy sowing blight resistant ones for the trail and basic Shirleys for the food bank that I forgot to sow anything for me!! I was planning on growing the varieties from the Dwarf Project but the seeds  all sold out before I got there, then I had to wait, now I have some ordered but they haven`t come yet so I figured I might use some of the above in the space reserved for the Dwarves.

The problem is they are calling me, I am tending them, potting them on etc and know there are some great ones there. So I thought I would pick a few and grow them on  but I just can't decide abd I don`t have room foir them all!!

The names will have to go in a hat I think.

Forgot to say many , just about three I have not personally grown before but mnay of the above I did grow in the UK.

The majority are hearts which I had a soft spot for for a long time and I do have seeds of most.

I never understand why people say MoneyMaker is bad???
I have grown it for the last two years and it gives good yields and I find the tomatoes to be very tasty, tender but not too squishy, and nice and juicy (but not too much, Tigerella I also grow and I like their flavour but the skins are a bit thick and they tend to have too much juice and pulp for me).
I do grow outdoors, maybe that makes a difference? I seem to have trouble with the heritage varieties, although I managed to germinate some Evergreen green tomatoes this year which I am looking forward to growing!
2012 - Snow in February, non-stop rain till July. Blight and rot are rife. Thieving voles cause strife. But first runner beans and lots of greens. Follow an English allotment in urban France: http://roos-and-camembert.blogspot.com

Money Maker , and Marmande would be my choice, didnt recognise any thing on your list  :-\

Give Casey's Pure Yellow a try. I actually grew it here as a trial in its early filial generations for Jeff Casey. That's if you like yellow tomatoes.  ;D

I think Jayb knows some of these,I am of no help looks like the list for the Grand National to me so maybe a pin and a blind fold may do the trick.
Good luck.

Hi Jeannine...
do you think your black plum is the same as my Black Mavr (which is plum shaped) I always assumed Mavr was just "plum" in some eastern European language...  :-\

small

Not tomato related......'Mavr' is Russian for Moor, as in Moor of Venice, so it's a sort of tautological name....

From the British Tomatoes website above:

Sunlight increases tomato yields, rather than warm temperatures. In fact, very hot weather may reduce yields and give poorer flavour and a shorter shelf-life. High temperatures also reduce the concentration of the red tomato pigment lycopene, which is receiving a lot of attention because of its potential health protecting properties. The optimum temperature for lycopene synthesis in tomato fruits is 16-21°C, exactly the range at which British growers aim to control the temperature of their glasshouses.

I learn something new here every time I come! Here's to a nice cool summer  :D :D

As to which to grow...I don't know, I'd want to grow them all too. No idea about any of the varieties but the names sound lovely. How about picking two cherry, two large ones, two unusual coloured ones and a random 7th one out of a hat?

Saddad, they are similar but are two different varieties. I have grown them side by side and my old notes say.

Mavr is slightly bigger, better flavour but BER was a problem on this one but not so in Black Plum, and as BER is a problem generally in plums it is a consideration . Black Plum was slightly earlier to start fruiting.

Well for what tr is worth, I have decided.

Crnkovic Yugoslavian..easy choice, this beefsteak has a high yeild and great flavour, old favourite.
Druzba..another easy choice, very high yeild, very disease tolerant, super taste, another regular.
Blondkopfchen, wanted a yellow cherry, so easy choice as is very productive, with great flavour Grow it often.
Italain Heirloom.Picked or its yeild, good taste, should do well for the foodbank
Dr Carolyn, white  to pale yellow cherry, a match for the other cherries, great flavour.Grown several times , reliable.
Black Plum, chosen as small plum, closest I have to a black cherry..have grown ,many times.

Last one was a tough one..couldn`t decide between Hillbilly or Berkeley Tie Dye. So kept both.Dr Carolyn may have to go if space gets tight.

Berkeley Tie Dye. Striped heart, outstanding flavour.Downside production is average. The only one I have not grown before.
Hillbilly, bicoloured beefsteak, great taste, down side it is very late.

I was very tempted on Cowlicks, reputed to be the finest of the Brandywine types but played it safe.

Next year I shall be so organised and plan my crops in October I think !!
