Allotments 4 All

I have some seed trays from Lidls - the kind that have 24 separate cells in. They came as a pack of four with propagator lids and bottom trays.  The inserts don't have any holes in - is this okay for sowing seeds or do I need to start pricking holes in them all?

Apologies if this is a silly question but I have had loads of similar things in the past from wilkos, homebase etc and they've all had holes.

That type of plastic doesn't make holes in very easily without cracking.

Maybe that's why they were cheap.

Use a sprayer when watering, rather than a watering can, so that you don't overwater.

I bought some from them last year, and to be honest didn't realise they didn't have any holes in the bottoms! So what I did was heat up and old fork in the hob gas until red hot then stabbed each module with it and it made several small holes.....then repeat..sorted! You can't eally use the fork for eating afterwards though, I guess you could use a skewer, hairpin, whatever you like!

The lidls ones aren't the standard size either... the Aldi ones wee much better.....

Thanks. I'd already filled two trays with seed and compost before I noticed ! so I'll give it a go trying to poke holes in one without spilling anything but I may need to leave them and see what happens :(

I'll use the hot skewer idea for the two empty ones that are left.
