I am an absolute numptie.  I bought some Arran Pilot seed potatoes about a month ago and because it was really frosty put them in a cupboard meaning to chit them as soon as the temperature raised ... and totally forgot all about them.  Just went to get them out and they have sprouted really big long shoots.  Have they had it?  Should I bin then or any suggestions?

Thanks

Rub the long shoots off, put them somewhere bright and let them rechit.... they'll be OK...

as Chriscross says.

mine were in a cupboard for a month, and like yours they had started to grow shoots, but put them in egg boxes on the windosill and all look fine and dandy to me  :)

Chriscross is right they will resprout, we have all made the same mistake before.

When I've done that I've just untangled them and planted them. They grew perfectly well.

Thanks for advice.  Am glad that there's hope as they were quite expensive ones.

At least if you only have one variety you can't get them mixed up.... somebody will (trays tipped over by cat/small child) any time now...  ;D

I have no children or cats, but I still write the potato variety on all my seed spuds with a marker pen....

I laid out all my potatoes in a wooden tray to chit, covered them with a thin film of packaging, turned around...and the cat was lying in the box!!!! She had taken a distinct shine to it!

So now it's up out of the way. Some of mine are old spuds that have put out spindly shoots, I just plant them that way!!
2012 - Snow in February, non-stop rain till July. Blight and rot are rife. Thieving voles cause strife. But first runner beans and lots of greens. Follow an English allotment in urban France: http://roos-and-camembert.blogspot.com
