My local authority has a ten year waiting list for an allotment.  Does anyone know the legal position of a prospective allotment holder with regard to demanding an allotment from a local authority?  Does the 'six tax payers' rule still apply?   Please help if you can.  Thanks. Lyric

I'm in Northumberland - you know that part of the country between Hadrians Wall and Scotland.  We have a lot of new house building in our area and don't know if our Council has made provision for allotments.  This is pigeon fancier country and many allotments are used mainly for keeping the little darlings.

I think somewhere in legislation you will find a law that the local authority have to supply allotments.  Your best bet is to email The Allotment link on bugboy's web site.  I think you will find that when they take green space/ allotment land and use for development there is somewhere in all the red tape that they have to supply allotments under the allotment act of 1920/21.

Hope this helps.

Hello Lyric,

A couple of useful sources?  How about John Prescott himself?  on http://www.urban.odpm.gov.uk/publications/gp/plotguide/index.htm

And the Scottish Allotment Association has a summary of all law related to allotment sites on http://www.sags.org.uk/HistLawAllot.php4

All best - Gavin
