1) 15lbs 9 ¼oz

Amazing, are they edible ?

Asssuming they're Aislae's then yes..... good for soup, good for onion gravy......

If you're just doing outdoors in the flat for something over a couple of pounds then use something like Kelsaes, started off in December/January indoors, grow on repotting twice under glass, harden off and plant ou in March with lots of BFB and chicken pellets into soil  that was manured the previous autumn. Top dress with plenty of nitrogen (I use dried blood) twice before the start of June, from end of June use tomato food and keep them well watered if we have a dry spell.... I can usually expect a half of them to be over two pounds if I do that....

For indoor monsters then you're going to need Aislae's or something similar, started under lights in October, grown through the winter in a setup with raised levels of Carbon Dioxide, which needs flushing in the dark periods and you'd be really needing to talk to some of the monster veg hardcore....

I'm trying a sort of halfway house next year... Aislaes sown in early December, maybe with some lights grown on indoors then the biggest will go into a polytunnel in middle-end March with autowatering.... the rest will be going out in the flat....

"Well" Ive only got 10lb 9 1/4oz  to catch up.  lol   ::)

This was my first year at growing giant onions in the polytunnel of which  I was quite pleased at the result.

The heaviest being 5lb exact.   These were Kelsae.   :)

Now I have a little more knowledge for my attempt in 2011, I will be growing Ailsae.

I have made my light box larger and higher so my plants can stay under longer as I don't have warming cables.

That means I have to wait for the weather and the soil to warm up.  I will also be growing a couple of these onions in large square wooden boxes 2 1/2 feet high, as I notice that Peter Glazebrook grows all his giants in barrels.  Maybe this helps more heat to reach the roots.  Who Knows.


I will be experimenting with lots of different ways and methods and noting everything as far as the results are concerned.

down in sussex.did you have your soil salinity
also did you send soil away for testing.

Hello 5 rod.    

No I didnt have any soil tests at all.  I wasnt really thinking of doing it serious.   But the bug just took over when I could see the onions getting bigger.  Now im out to try and keep beating my own record.

Next year I will have a soil test after I have first drenched the beds in dilute bleach and given them a good washing through to get rid of the salt, and then prepared them.

I will be experimenting with .....Hydrogen Peroxide.....Worm Tea.....Comfrey Tea....Nutrimate.....Micorrhizal Fungi...... Plus different ways and amounts of watering plus different ways of planting.   :o
