Hi Jacob.  Welcome to A4A.  Sorry I am not into Gourds but hopefully someone will come along soon with an answer for you.

Hi Jacob, welcome to A4A, hope you will be very happy here. I'm not big into growing gourds but have very kindly been given some seeds to grow for next year by a loverly lady Jeannine.

Nicky's Nursery do some varieties but no idea if they are grown in Britian, you could drop them an email, here's a link http://www.nickys-nursery.co.uk/seeds/pages/page6-gourds.htm

I'll keep an eye out and post any more sites I come across.

Are bottle gourds also known as Dudhi.  I have seen them in Asda and wondered what they were like cooked.  It would be interesting to try and grow them.

I just love the pics of the gourds on Nicky site.   They look amazing.

LIDLE have packs of seeds for them every Spring at 29p a pack. Less than the cost of second class postage!

They are very easy to grow and I suggest that you use poor land for them because they can get very large, not what we want for decoration. (Unless you want them them large)

They last for ages too. Florists may have some but when I grew them, they produced loads and I ended up giving most away to a friend who has a natural talent for floral decorations and she made some lovely displays with them for Christmas.

Like all gourds and squashes they tend to take over an area when you grow them but can be trained to grow up a fence or something similar. My best ones for small sizes which made the nicest decorations grew in a damp area behind a shed which was in the shade. I don't think I have heard of any one growing them commercially. May be there is a gap in the market for a budding entrepreneur

Our daughter grew the Lidl ones and they are so nice and so diverse
When I get old I don't want people thinking
"What a sweet little old lady"........
                             I want em saying
"Oh Crap! Whats she up to now ?"

Sounds like a good bit of fun for 29p,  T&M have a russian doll gourd which also looks like fun.   My daughter likes Russian Dolls.  I wonder whether you can put something heavy in the bottom and make them wobble about.

Jacob

Thanks for all the replies.

I am aware of the how to get hold of seeds, but I am not a grower. If anyone would be interested in growing them for me please send me a message. I live in London so would be good not to have to travel too far.
