Allotments 4 All

Hi all ,I'm thinking of building a new shed on the lottie it will be approx 12 x8 The reason why I'm building it my existing shed is only 6 x4 and potatoes and onions dint tend too store well ,think it gets too hot in there ,anyway I'm getting a load of used decking its only 2 years old.Has anyone else got any experience of making a shed with decking and any tips .

That's a big shed. Make sure that you are allowed one that big.
There used to be very strict rules although during the years when allotments were hard to let, I think they tended to be relaxed.
Some councils are still very strict.

We had to ask permission to put up an 8x6. That is the maximum size on our site. Just check what size you are allowed to erect.

there are no size restrictions ,as other plot holders have larger ones than the one I intend to make soon

We have plot holders who have larger sheds than current rules allow.  They were erected prior to the shed size rules being put in place.  Current rules allow 6x8ft on a full plot,  4x6ft on a half plot.  Larger sheds built prior to the new rules are allowed to stay, but should they ever need to be replaced, then any replacement shed must adhere to new rule sizes. 

We also have to submit a sketch of where the shed is to be sited on the plot to the town council.  Nobody is ever denied one,  its just policy.  Just check your tenancy agreement.  You don't want to be told to dismantle it after you have built it.......

maybe the trick is to dig down and create an underground room 12 x 10 with a 6x4 shed on top of the access hatch?  :D

That might work if the water table was well below ground level,, but I have a record of someone trying to build an Anderson shelter on my plot during WW2. It flooded. When I took the plot on, bits of it were still there holding up the stream bank.

I was only allowed a 6'x4' so built my own as the ones you buy are rubbish.

Are you buiding it on your own? if so i would build sections about 4' - 6' wide out of 2"x2" and join them together, then clad in the decking with the smooth side facing out.
Its not hard to do, just make sure you suppy us with pictures to show how your getting on.

No restrictions on our plots. i have a 8x6 shed and a 10x8 shed with a 8x8 lean to.    8)

Im thinking of putting  in a landing strip so i can go back and forth with the microlight :   ;D

well decking should be coming next week and getting dropped off at home so will be making sides , possibly the back and door at home as will be able to use electric circular saw too ct the wood to size,my plot is only 5 mins walk from home so will get a hand to transport them over ,getting a double glazed window not sure of size yet so wont make the front until then,hope its done in time before the bad weather as my existing shed is only 6x4 and is full of potatoes and onions,still have 5 more rows of pots too dig and its a bit cramped .Thinking of only making it 6 ft wide as already have paths and beds .,but like most projects will probably change my mind a few more times

well nearly finished only the door to make hopefully tomorrow and to silicon seal the  gaps where the wood has warped   ,wasn't enough timber for the size I wanted but still made it 9 x6 with the roof made from onduline sheets.Its took longer than I thought but enjoyed doing it, the old timers have been along and gave advice some of it took but must have made a canny job as got no complaints.Will think of furnishing it with gas cooking stove .seating etc.

Good job superdupa, every allotment shed should have a stove. :)

And a chimney.   ;D ;D ;D

             You want to try the window frame sealant rather than silicone for the joints on your shed it could be a cheaper alternative, personally I would run the decking through my router table and put a feather edge on it or a five mil groove to interlock it when it goes together to make it water tight, :)

well its now finished,guttering up barrel positioned,gas stove installed African mask to ward off the wife  now set for winter
