Mmm, I like blackberries! I picked some this morning, along with a few raspberries, and they've gone already!  :)

they look delicious, no wonder they have all gone. we don't have any raspberry's,though we do have  loganberry canes that do give us a few , not even enough to share. and this year we have Karens dog a cream lab and as he goes past the loganberries and sees one nearly ripe he has it,
same as with plums that drop he gets them pit as well.  this is the loganberry eater.

luv ya, qahtan

They were as delicious as they look! Sadly they were the last of the raspberries.  :(
Thankfully I don't seem to lose many to the wildlife!  :)

I love the expression labs get when they're being loved, like they know they're gorgeous, they just can't help it.

I picked the first blackberries today as well - delicious. I think the flavour is nicer than raspberries, much richer. Although I have enjoyed my first year of raspberries this summer.

It's interesting what you said about blackberries tasting different, qahtan. I wish I could know what you mean, but I suppose you can't really describe a taste very easily.

another funny picture.

GrannieAnnie

Such a sweet docile looking dog. Makes me miss our long-deceased black lab who had a wonderful happy temperment.

Super picture, he looks very sweet. Must be all the fruit he nicks. Ours here are almost ready in the hedgerows, bramble jelly is John's favourite, of all the ones we make this is the one he doesn;t like me to offer around.

After the hard winter the brambles round here are bursting with fruit.  I just hope there is enough water to fatten the fruit up.  Hopefully the established plants have roots that go down to the watertable.

Sorry about the lack of taste Qahtan, I have one in my garden which is particularly delicious and produces over 100 large berries on each flower head.  It is however a terrible brute of a plant.  I am prepared to give an offset to anyone who is sane.  But if you want one you must be insame.  ::)

Your jelly looks lovely just right to put on some of your home made bread. ;D  I used to make jams and jellies but even making them is so fattening.  I just love eating the scum. Best tasting bit of the whole batch.

My blackberries are you can see are really nice fat shiny fruits, with fat juicy blobs of juice,  there are 4 plants one is thornless but is mixed with the others so we really don't know what comes from where,. By the way they do not grow wild over here or at least in Ontario.
the taste and colour is different to the ones from uk, Ours tend to be on the sour side even when fully ripe. the colour, well yours in UK  tends to be bemore black with maybe a hint of purple, ours the juice is dark red
like rich blood, a real red, thats the best I can explain

I picked just on a kilo today from my usual spot and was surprised to see how fat and juicy they are - in spite of the lack of rain. Made blackberry and apple jelly, fiddly but worth it. I'll go again next week to pick for the freezer.

Brambles have very deep roots so it's not often they fail. I've seen lots of things aborting this year, but the brambles don't seem to have noticed.

Digeroo

Mine are fattening up very well indeed.  Amazing really.  Means that the roots have gone through 6-8 feet of more or less solid gravel to reach the water underneath.

I would offer to send you some seeds qahtan but I do not think the state of Ontario would ever forgive me.

They are just ripening in the hedgerows.  The fruit is delicious but the plants are a real pest.  The end of every spur of every branch is capable of forming a new plant not to mention the ones the birds drop.

qahtan

Thank you for the kind offer, but yes customs are a bit sticky on things that.
I see you are in Faringdon area, had a friend that lived there, we stayed with her a couple times when we were over there... She has sinced moved to Rustington...... qahtan

Digeroo

I hope that when you visited Faringdon you did so in August and went Blackberry picking.

Jeannine

BC is covered with them, funny it never entered my head that they wouldn't be in Ontario.I often wondered why folks would buy plants, now it makes sense. It also explains why I have never noticed a difference in taste between here and the UK, maybe it is the  cutivated ones that taste different, gosh everyday I learn things on here.

What about cuttings from BC, I can do that for you  no problem, I could root them and send them on when stable or just send the cuttings Qahtan which ever you think best.

Thank you for the kind offer, But I think I must decline  your offer, the blackberry plants we have now are really enough for our needs and a couple of friends, and with every thing else in the garden it is now getting a bit too much for Gerry to look after.
He is even talking about cutting down a couple trees, and our veggie garden is only half as big as normal. It is suppose to be the golden years.
