Hi. My garlic has grown to a good size this season but on a number of them, the stem has split a few inches above the main cluster and more cloves have formed. Not seen this happen before. Are these what are known as 'scapes'?

On the plants that have split, the main cluster has not grown as big as the other plants.

Scapes appear  at the top of a plant and look like flower buds.
What you are seeing are bulbils which can be planted in the Autumn and will probably produce a small head of garlic.

Ooh... another wacky garlic thread I don't have to start.... I've got a couple of those on mine too....

Thanks Realfood. I shan't bother planting them out, we eat a lot of garlic here :) I'm assuming I CAN eat them.
