Allotments 4 All

I have a north facing fence that gets sunlight until about 11am at this time of the year, but not a lot in the colder, darker months.

I'd love to cover it with climbers or trained plants. And I'd like them to be edible or medicinal as I try to only grow plants that are useful.

Is there anything that fits these categories that will grow in shade? I'm happy for it to be something that is not usually eaten, like roses with hips or honeysuckle!

At West Dean they used to (probably still do) grow cordon red currants and white currants up some north facing walls. Tall pillars, completely smothered in fruit, when I used to teach there in June/July.

It's not a climber but what about Tree Spinach (Chenopodium giganteum)? Three plants will cover a 6 foot fence panel easily and mine thrive on a north facing fence.  :)

But I'll look into getting some tree spinach - is it periennial or annual? and a morello cherry. Mmm - I love cherries!

Tree Spinach is an annual but it self seeds readily.  I can send you some seeds if you PM me.   :)
