Thank you Robert, I thought that was what I'd done - I shall go to the computers board and play around there!
I've never mastered using the quote button so I'm experimenting on this board, take no notice of me.....

Now I'm experimenting with only quoting part of the message....

small

Failed. Shall try again.

This time I hope my reply isn't in the box.....

Success.  If I can do this, surely I can grow a cauliflower......

The smiley doesnt get rendered to an image until you post or preview - you will see the brackets and other letters/puncutation until you click on post...

The help section accessed via the button at the top of every page explains how all the posting options work, what the buttons do etc...
http://www.allotments4all.co.uk/smf/index.php?action=help;page=post

The preview button allows you to check the layout of your message before it is posted or if you do post something but need to change it then for an hour or 2 you will see a button in the top right hand corner of your post, clicking it allows you to edit your post or the allows you to delete your post.

sarah

as for the quote thingumy as long as your text is outside the quote it wont be included.

when you 'insert quote' the quote will appear in your text box between a [quote and a [/quote] and you can edit the quote within to just use part of it if necessary for instance if you just want a small part of a longer quote.  ;)

Obviously not like this!  How do you get the bit you're qouting from to appear in a nice neat box?  I too have tried this before and never got it right.  But at least I can do smilies now! :D

I can do whole quotes in  a box but not parts  :(
'can do smilies ;)
sanity is overated

For the quote to be in a box it needs quote tags either side so it looks like this.

[/quote]

Which is displayed like this.

If desired you can edit the quoted text by deleting anything not relevant like this which is the same quote as above but I deleted the words "Obviously not like this!" & corrected the spelling of the word quoting"

Yes, but can you get a "[/quote]" in a quote ? (not that there's any reason you'd want to)

No, well not unless you add something like bold or italic tags to it as above which is why I used code tags to show the layout of the quoted text you would see when typing a post.

I'm still not grasping how you actually operate the insert quote mechanism!  Sorry for being such a technophobe!

gwynnethmary

Oh!  I did it!  That was a shock!    ???:o ;D
