My wife was given some giant bamboo seeds for Christmas and they're just coming through in the propagator. Does anyone know if they'll be ok in large containers and if they're frost resistant? We have some black bamboo in a large pot that's got through the winter outside fine but we weren't sure if the same would be true of giant bamboo.

As for the pot question..well the giant bit with name maybe the glue..
you can grow it in the pot for short while, but it will grow out of pot quickly..
Larger bamboos are not happy in pots for long term as there is room issue and as they are hunry plants,,adequate supply of nutrients and water is job and half..
Frost should not be problem,,but that's why latin name would help..to know exact species that you have got..many of them are nick named giant..

The Latin name is Bambusa arundinacea and came from JungleSeeds. The "giant bit with the name" did indeed give me a clue but as we have other type of bamboo in large containers, I was wondering if it was going to be possible or not as this one is obviously going to be much much larger.

Wondering what size of container you have in mind for a plant that growes to 100 foot with 6 inch canes. Wouldnt put it in the gorund either unless you want to lose all your other plants.

The giant Bambusa sp. aren't hardy I'm afraid. It'll go ok in a very big pot but obviously not to the extent it would in the tropics in the ground. If you want a big one for outside there are some big phyllostachys species but not to the same extent as the biggest tropicals and they do run.

That's right..bambusas will not last UK weather..they can take little frost for short periods but not as we have it..have you got a conservatory...?

As I said, it was given to us at Christmas with some other seeds, and was wondering what to do with it  now it's germinated.

I know in the tropics it can grown to 40 metres, I know that's not going to happen here, and I know that I'm not going to plant it in the middle of the garden - I just wanted to know if it was going to be viable in a container and whether it can stay outside all year round - seems that might be a problem though.
