You may have heard on the news that St Mary's Church Westry  (March Cambs) has been destroyed by arsonists. I am not a Church goer but it was a lovely old Church. My daughter and son were married there and my son has made the signs and notice board for the Church. They estimate the cost for repairs will be £1000,000. What is wrong with these people?

While Arson to Church buildings is nothing new It's still a shame...  :'(

Lorna, that is such a shame, I just had a look, it is sad to see a church look like that. :(

It's the church commissioners I feel sorry for.  They're down to their last £4 billion and I just dont know how they're going to manage.

A church near us was in need of total maintenance and when the costing was done it made more sense to demolish it and build a new one which is what was done.

The old fashioned style church, used for the usual was replaced with a modern building which incorporated a community centre. Perhaps not as visually churchy from the exterior but far more use to a modern community.

I think some times we get sentimental about old buildings which have outlived their use.

In this case, it could be a Phoenix rising out of the ashes. Hope it was insured.

Mortality

Such a shame  >:(
I hope it gets rebuilt and the arsonists caught.
Please don't be offended by my nickname 'Mortality'
As to its history it was the name of a character I played in an online game called 'Everquest'
The character 'Mortality Rate' was a female Dark Elf Necromancer, the name seemed apt at the time and has been used alot by me over the years.

Haven't heard if the culprits have been found.

Unwashed, I am sure they would have insurance so their 4 billion will be safe, but regardless of that I think it is terrible that people can do such things!!!

I do agree, Lorna.  It is such a shame :(  I'm not religious at all but I do feel very sad when acts like this take place.  My boss lives in a little village called Sheering which is about five miles from where I live and in January their little church was set ablaze too.  All the villagers were understandably very upset http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/essex/8453269.stmhttp://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/essex/8453269.stm
