Allotments 4 All

I have just planted these two trees for fruiting.
Elstar Apple, and Morello cherry, are the types.
Is there any after care which needs to be considered?
I have dug a hole and plonked them in.
I will feed them and weed around them, when needed.
Any other tips or help will be good to know.

 Keep the base clear of grass and weeds :)
I assume you watered them in too....  ;)

I use corrigated drain pipe around all mine as well as the beans as it makes it easy to water them.



As long as you got all the air out and watered them well (before and after) and the grafted join is above the soil, then they will do fine.

I have followed the directions and they are now in the ground.
The thing I can train them to do at the moment is sit all other methods of training will come when they have grown a bit.
Beg, lay down, heel, and keep off the sofa will be taught later. ;D ;D ;D

Various modern trials recommend planting fruit trees without fertiliser (to encourage roots to get out and about) but putting a square metre of black plastic over the roots to maintain the right level of moisture (not too much, not too little) which is the only help the roots need.

It also makes it a lot easier for us by limiting weeds and reducing watering.

They love it!

We shall have to wait and see if they grow and if they bare fruit.
I shall try to keep you all updated with what does or does not happen over the course of the season.

Not sure that cherries are very easy,  I have one morello and one ornamental that have not died the rest have all decided they are unhappy and died.  The morello is about 20 years old and is still grasping on to life with a thread it certainly has one foot on a banana skin and always has.  Yet apples do very well here.

If I had the same luck as I did with the gooseberry then this is going to be a short season indeed. :-[

you will have to water them all season until they are well established. This is more important than feeding them at this stage. Keep a clear area around the base as any competition will hurt. Mulch. Enjoy.

Am I right in thinking that you have to have another tree (apple) for them to pollinate each other? ???

No pollinator required as the both are self fertile.
At least that is what it says on the label.
