Seems one of our compost heaps has acquired a collection of wasps who appear on mass a bit miffed whenever I top it up. How do I get rid of them?

Time - they die out in autumn - or wasp nest killer.

:) just leave them, they will be dead soon, I've had a massive nest in my compost heap and no pests on my plot, wasps are one of natures goodies/ shades x

If the wasps have recently gone into the compost heap then it is unlikely to be a nest and your heap would have to be too dry anyway. Have you been putting in fruit that is fermenting and perhaps attracting them? In which case I would cover it with lawn mowings or something. I threw in a whole pile of windfall apples, complete with a few wasps and i covered them over. No particular problem now.
