Allotments 4 All

My raised beds are now teaming with veg, unfortunatley after a few good meals , theres still loads left, ie Runner beans, green beans, beetroots , corgettes, cabbage etc.

What should i do with this to stop it going to waste and save some for the winter months? Any ideas/advise

I recommend getting Preserves: River Cottage Handbook No.2. It's full of recipes for preserving your fruit and veg. It's £8.99 from Amazon. Wish I'd known. I paid £14.99 for it a few weeks ago!  ::)

The book goes into lots of detail including how long the food will keep.

On a different note the River Cottage handbook for bread is excellent too.

If you don't fancy pickling, making jam etc, just cook up your favourite recipes and freeze it.

I had so much fruit this year that there was not enough freezer space so I bottled some gooseberries and blackcurrants for the first time.

Here is a photo of the gooseberries, both green and red varieties in 1 litre jars.

The jars came from Lakeland Limited. The barcode labels were too difficult to get off.

I think they look fantastic and cannot wait for a gooseberry crumble when the cooler nights come
