sorry to keep picking everyones brains, i have grown carrots in pots this year which came up brilliant.  i have nearly finished my first pot and would like to put in some new potatoes for xmas.  can i use the same compost (as they are both root veg) or should i start again with fresh

No reason why not providing the carrots were not diseased however you will have to add some fertiliser to the compost.

Empty the pot, toss the soil to let air into it and add a handful of a general fertiliser at the same time, then pot up as normal!
