Allotments 4 All

Does anyone know where I can buy protective sleeves to wear when pruning roses. I do have a pair of gaiters which protect the legs but arms , NO.  I lost the 'War of the Roses' the other day and now my arms are liberally covered in several bits of plaster.  I am hoping to find something like the leg ones in a sort of nylon/plastic coated material.  Any help will be much appreciated.

if you have basic sewing skills or even handy with a sewing machine they should be fairly easy to produce yourself. maybe you could recycle the sleeves off of an old sweatshirt or jacket, by cutting them off and hemming the cut ends then run some elastic through the newly hemmed areas to help it stay in place when you put them on.

maybe what you are looking for is a pair of gauntlets. something like these?

I find the gauntlets a bit cumbersome and they're often quite expensive.

When I'm pruning roses or tieing them in I just make sure I'm in long sleeves that are snugly fitted and the thickest gloves I've got. With a bit of care and a plan of attack I can generally avoid the self harm look !

would agree that they are a bit pricey. another alternative would be to go to a charity shop and buy a leather / swede jacket, but just for the sleeves - nice and tough and a cheaper option ??

Thanks very much for all your suggestions, I rather like the idea of the charity shop leather jacket, and I think I will give the charity shop a good look in any case. I am not much of a needlewoman, I'm more 'Velcro' but I am sure I wshall devise something.

I'm sure I saw a thread some time ago where someone (possibly EJ) used big pop bottles with the tops cut off to protect the arms while doing this sort of thing. not tried it myself but it just reminded me of it. the leather jacket idea is good though.
