Has anyone else had a serious attack of slugs this year?  I invested in nematodes after last years inavsion but they are next to useless.  I let the company I bought them from know because since applying them, I seemed to have more than ever so they sent me another pack....still no better!   I have resorted to the slug pellets again as they seem to have more effect.  Every night I've been collecting up the black slimy beasts and dropping them in the frog pond by the dozens but since using pellets again, there are still loads but this time they're dead ones!

If you're using the metaldehyde pellets and putting the slugs in your frog pond, you may also be poisoning the frogs.

I may be wrong as I`ve never tried them, but I had the impression that the slug specific nematodes worked mainly on slugs below the soil surface, and not on those above ground.

Ah, no, it was the slugs BEFORE I put pellets down as I wasn't sure if death by pellet would hurt the frogs.
Thanks for that though coz I wasn't certain, although I've been playing safe.

Yes you're right, and it takes 7 days for full protection they say, but since I applied them, I've had more slugs than ever so obviously the nematodes haven't done their job.  I bit annoying when it costs the best part of a tenner for a very small tray of them!

Nematodes are tricky to use... keeping the soil moist etc, but I have found they help in the end... beer traps are a good short term solution..
Did you check the date on the Nematodes? I have had them sent to me "out of date" before now...  :-X
