I'm not sure if I've got the right section for this, but here goes.....

My water butts are full of small swimmy things, water nymphs?

Am I right in thinking that you can keep goldfish in water butts and they keep the water clean, or is this a lottie myth?

Swimmy things are probably mosquito larvae.  Simplest thing is to cover the butt.

I have 2 goldfish in a water butt. They are perfectly happy and no mosquito larvae.

I have one in my large water tank collector at home, it has been there for three years, is quite large and must do well off the mozzie larvae! It is in a shady spot by a hedge getting rainwater off the garage so doesn't get too hot which is something to watch.
If it's not pouring with rain, I'm either in the garden or at the lottie! Probably still there in the rain as well TBH....🥴

Do you feed them? I have two large steel tanks and I'm thinking of having fish and waterlilies once I get them set up.

I don't feed mine, but he is on his own and has grown considerably since he has been in there, so I guess he is getting enough to eat!

Mrs Soup

thank you all for the advice.

I like the idea of goldfish in my waterbutts, so I'll give this a go
