Leftover (water) melons

I've just planted out a dozen melons and water melons and I'm out of space with another dozen or so healthy plants left over. I've tried giving them away but no luck there as the old guys here seem to fill their plots with onions and if they've got any spare space they'll put more onions in - I swear my neighbour has over 200 hundred onions on the go - all planted at the same time! Anyway, is it worth putting the (water) melons into large pots and see what happens, or is it just a waste of good compost?

Cheers!

Plant them  in a big pot - that's what I did with mine last year. The best ones were the ones I grew up a wigwam in a pot.
No fruit tree knowingly left un-tried. http://abseeds.blogspot.com/
