Allotments 4 All

I have 2 x 12/14ft rows of autumn raspberries.  I have never looked after them and they have grown very tall and I have just left the fruit for the birds to eat, the last two years.

In the autumn last year I chopped them down to ground level and they have started to grow really well again this year so have decided I would like to look after them and get some good crops from them to eat myself.

So, how do I look after them?  Can I chop them down a bit when they start getting too tall or would this damage them?  Is there anything I can do or give to them to encourage them to fruit well?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Chopping them down at the end of each season, and a bit of fertiliser in spring, a bit of top dressing/mulch is all they need...  :)

And maybe some netting so you get to the fruit 1st  :)

Interestingly the birds don't tend to eat the autumn cropping raspberries as much as they do the summer fruiting ones.

Rarely do they need that much support, either - though tying them up loosely to canes can make picking easier.

We are switching over more to the autumn raspberries as they are a lot less work and round off the soft fruit year so well.

Thats good news, as so far I've only got an autumn variety  :D
