We spent today building a pergola at the plot.

We are planning to grow a grape vine up it. We will be putting some bracing up and it will have a lattice back to it.

We are in Manchester UK.

I have been having a bit of a "google" and Boskoop Glory keeps coming up as a reliable grape for UK growing. Anyone have experience of this?

The pergola is approx 6x7ft square. Would 2 grape vines give a reasonable crop? Or is 1 better for a pergola this size? I am thinking about the possibility of wine, but also like the idea of dessert grapes too.

I may be wrong but I think my grapevine from wilkos is one of these it was £4  I only got it last week, I'll check the next time I go to lottie./ shades x

I'd be more tempted to try "Regent" a seedy red, which works well for me in Derby, and "Lakemont" a seedless white. You will need to trim radically to keep two vines on that... mine has delusions of world domination...  :)

I've got a Boskoop Glory but it's in the greenhouse. I didn't realise they'd be OK outside but if that's your information then good luck!

can you eat either of these as dessert grapes?  :) Maybe I should just have the 1 grape vine?

I jsut got that impression from reading around. Don't know if the info is correct  ;D

Your grapes look great in the greenhouse. How do they taste?

Both are good dessert grapes Sparkly but the Regent tends to produce too many bunches (smaller grapes) unless you are very severe with it and as it has seeds it's a bit of a faff...  ::)
