I have onions in a raised bed over the winter they plenty of growth but on inspection they look more like Leeks, what I intend to do is use them between my rows of carrots to deter carrot fly, any problems with doing this, :)

I'd be tempted to leave them and see if they swell.

If you are surwe they are onions I would proceed as planned... I'm planting out the onion sets now... Not sure leeks smell enough to deter carrot fly...  :-\

They are onions but look like leeks, :)

Are the leaves flat or round?

Flat leaves = Leeks

Round leaves = Onions

Next thing is are they Japanes onions? If so I wouldn't move them.

It should be OK to sow your carrots between the rows of onions in the hope that the smell will act as a deterrant.

Having said that a lot depends upon when you sow your carrots ??? The onions may be ready for harvesting before the carrots have matured.

I get the feeling that you are getting your onions a bit mixed up here. I think you mean growing 'summer' onions along side your carrots. If this is the case then you can plant and sow in alternate rows to give you the effect you want.

Sorry if this reply is a bit vague but it is all down to the type of onions you are referring to.

I am presuming these were onion seeds sown last autumn .If so you can move them to between your carrots. Try transplanting them to the same depth they are at now, no deeper. If they were from onion sets you put in last autumn and you transplant them now, they wil grow on but stand a  chance of bolting or going to seed. If you need the bed go for it. ;)

Don't move the overwinter onions, they do look more green than bulb, these will swell.

You can not move them without disturbing the roots and as soon as you do they will bolt and be useless.

If you want to sow onions beside carrots, use spring onion seeds.

It doesn't work as a deterrent to carrot fly. The only way to avoid carrot fly is to get a fast growing carrot and plant it at the beginning of June and dig them out 12 weeks later, or cover the carrots with fleece.
