Allotments 4 All

just been going through my seeds in preparation, and i have 2 varieties of sweetcorn both from suttons,
f1 applause and f1 sundance,
on the applause it says do not grow near other sweetcorn any idea why?
I was going to plant them all in a block.

The newer "supersweet" varieties loose a lot of sweetness if cross pollinated with older less sweet sorts... if you are using them fresh as corn on the cob I doubt it will matter too much.. as everyone else on the lotties is growing their own varieties of corn...  :-\

As people only plant small beds on allotments, 20 yards is enough separation. Keep supersweets away from other types, but you can grow them together. Last year I grew two types on the plot, and had no problems at all.

There is also the latest type
Extra tender and Sweet (tendersweet) F1. The sweetest type with softer kernels. The catalogues claim that isolation of this type from other types of sweet corn, is not required. Also can be quick to mature and should be ready to harvest in September in the North of the UK, and this is the type that I would recommend.

Suggested varieties of Extra Tender and Sweet (tendersweet)

Swift F1.  Very early, very sweet and tender.

Lark F1.    Mid season, very sweet and tender.
