Hello everyone,

i need to find out how to bed my asparagus and rhubarb for the winter. do i just leave as is or can i mulch the crowns with homemade compost now or do i add compost to their beds in the spring ???.

if i mulch now do i wait for the foliage to die down on its own or can i remove it now and mulch or do i leave the dieing foliage in situ and add mulch ???.

thanks in advance for your replies.

Asparagus - we mulch with manure in the autumn, cut the ferns down to a couple of inches above ground when they turn yellow (about now or soon)

Rhubarb - we let the leaves on the plants die down and they sort of mulch the crowns and then give them a light mulch of manure with another light mulching in the spring.

Been doing just that today with some VERY VERY old manure  ;D ;D ;D
