Tomorrow 28th September our allotments  are holding a competition  with a £25 prize money for the longest scarlet runner bean grown from seeds bought from Wilkos.  Most beans are  around 12 to 14 ins in length.     With the exception of just one persons beans they are much longer and straighter than ours  would it be possible for this to happen grown from beans from the same packets of seed that they have all used.  What length bean do you usually expect from scarlet runners?  Incidently as secretary I'm not entering the competition so it's not sour grapes on my part I'm just curious.

sounds fishy to me. Maybe when they've all been measured you could have a look inside at the beans. They may look different. £25 would tempt me for sure. Perhaps they hung weights on them

I suppose it would have to be done tactfully. We don't want to read about it in the Daily Mail

could the beans not be snapped to make sure they are fresh (not bought in)?

We decided to judge the beans on the plants to save any cheating, hoping people would stick to using just the six bean seeds they were given.
