Lifted my spuds, PFA, dried them out and stored them in jute sack.  Trouble is they are rotting away like mad - what have I done wrong?

Any suggestions will be appreciated so that I don't make the same mistake next year.  Thanks

did the crop get blight, if so maybe it got into the tubers before they were lifted.
I'm sorry for your losses though, its never easy to see your hard work rot away.

I check my sacks every couple of weeks and remove any suspect spuds otherwise they rot the lot and it becomes a horrid stinking gloopy mess. :-[ :o :o

I always remove the haulms from the plants a while before I harvest, to reduce the risk of the tubers being infected with blight during harvest.

Did you allow them to dry out for a couple of days before bagging them up?

After lifting my spuds, I wash them and then let them dry sandwiched between layers of newspaper for several days. Then inspect them for any that are diseased or have holes before bagging the ones for storage.
This prevents any diseased ones getting into storage.

Only takes one to start rotting and it quickly spreads to the rest. Keep checking them regularly and remove any that look a bit suspect. Trust you're keeping them somewhere cool and dry?
