Allotments 4 All

my allotment when i got it already had a compst bin made from corrugated metal, neighbour tells me the rats live in it and he had been putting rat poison down while it had no tenant
Went to dismantle it today to get rid of it and 2 flaming rats ran past i C**pped myself lol
anyone know how i can get rid permanently?

huge mousetrap, maybe i think of something else coz i could see me losing my fingers lol

If you use urine as a activator while making the compost ( it works) it keeps the rats away as well ( they dont like the smell of humanes) as they will over winter and raise their young in the compost bin.
Urine will also get rid off moles if poured down the mole holes.
Just collect the morning samples its stronger.

I cant use the compost the neighbout put rat poison on it before the allotment was let to me, so i need to get rid of the compost

Rat poison in the compost wont stop you using it. It does not affect the soil so there is no need to get rid of it.
Why not just shift it so it is ready to put on the land in Autum

  I tried to use urine in my compost bin - not very successful as I kept falling off !

I found the bin was to tall

Use a bucket. Rat poison won't harm your veg.

Just make sure no hole in the bucket   :-[ been their done it  ;D nearly fell over laughing.

or find some willing toddlers hand them a bottle of juice and make ready with the potty :) my plots furthest from the loo so nobody questions my logic, tho my 4yr old does look odd with trousers round ankles peeing up the pile of couch grass ive dug out... not quite the compost bin but hey ho! if i had a shed id make use of theyre loo seat thingy and a bucket :) might be a little less embarassing, i cant walk thru the drs with a pee sample without it being drowned in loo paper and "concealed" in my hand (even tho everyones seen you go to the loo with a pot) so dont think i could cope carrying bottles of pee about the place!  :-[

hmmm someone said not safe to put on plants when its had rat poison in it, not really worried about getting rid there is not that much of it, the rats are the ones i want rid of LOL

If you shift the compost you will only get rid of the rats out of the compost not necessarily out of your garden. I would have thought that if the rat poison had been placed properly the rats would have disposed of it by eating or taking it to the nest. Also any residue of poison should have been flushed out by the weather by now. At the end of the day its what you feel comfortable about not the advice that is given.

I agree with davyw1, what ever you do make sure you ware rubber gloves handling any home made compost, if it contains rats pee , animal manure etc. Please make sure your tetinus injections are up to date gardening can have nasty effects. 

Well then I presume it wasnt laid right if the darn rats are still there, to be honest there is no where else they could hide in the garden its been stripped to the ground and only has a greenhouse and metal shed on it at the moment oh and the COMPOST BIN
but then again im sure they will find somewhere to hide huh

Oh my lord its sounding scary now  :'(

There is nothing to be scared about, if there is no cover for the rats then they will move on, rats only linger where they can hide and where there is food.
