Hello,

I have seven 'Alicante' tomato plants that I have been growing on in 9" pots at home in the back garden and I would like to move them down to the plot now that it's coming together...

But I'm not sure what is best to do with them? Do I leave them potted and just sink them in the ground or should they be removed from the pots and planted in to the ground  :-\

Any advice would be great as this is my first attempt with more than one plant lol

Thanks,

They look fantastic - too good for the plot ;)

You can plant direct - a bit deeper than they are currently in their pots or you could use bottomless pots or buckets, set those into the soil, some compost then plant into that - semi ring culture.

I use bottomless pots - mine are out now - go take a look.

They seem quite established in the pot so just ensure that there are enough holes in the base to let the big roots find the water and sink them into the ground as is. Make sure you have prepared the soil with some kind of nutrient and then treat as if you are doing ring culture.
This is more or less what I am planning for this year.

Hi Im a total newcomer to growing tomatoes & am also growing in pots at the moment but was considering transplanting to my allotment ... was wondering why they get transplanted still in their pots? is it to stop root disturbance?
Thanks
