Which animal to keep?

I would like to keep some sort of animal on my allotment. What I would like is something that you could feed kitchen scraps and weeds to at one end and at the other collect useful manure. This would also have to be low maintenance.

This animal is probably called a compost heap - any other suggestions?

Chickens if you are allowed and can visit twice every day

You could try rats but there's not much eating on them...

If you have got the space and your allotment allows livestock... How about an African Pygmy Goat or two ;D

i would ask if you could keep pigs as the return on the meet is brill and they will eat everything you put in front of them

i wonder if pigs would eat horse tail.

I totally adore Pigs!

I lived 5 years ago on a farm and just in the field behind the house lived Lucy - who was a beautiful intelligent pig but her run was just a complete mud bath!  the farmer fed her on top of this mud - just tipped it out and she also was used as a baby pig provider and she would have her babies - and was immediately mated again and when the babies were old enough she was pushed back to her mud patch.  I fed her bits that I got from a greengrocers and she loved it - as she never saw any green on the ground.  She was so beautiful and sweet-  I still wish that I could have done more for her!

Having said that the meat was sensational.

Pigs would rootle and probably not allow marestail to grow!

Why don't you consider chickens because the other bonus you get is eggs as well as manure and getting rid of your scraps too!
