I have a raised pond 10ft x 5ft x 4ft deep with full sun light from mid morning (10 ish) till evening.

I have plenty of pond weed and 5 different lillies. Only one lilly has reached the surface so far but there are loads more shoots growing.

I have noticed that in the last week or so my pond temperature has shot up to about 22c.

Is this normal for a pond or not, as it seems a bit high to me and will it come back down a bit when
my lillies start to cover the surface.

Yes this is normal. Yes the temp will come down as the lillies grow to add shade.

I always take up the temp of new koi to over 29c/85f to see if any diseases are lurking and to 'up' the immune system of the fish so dont worry about 22c.

The less water you have the more the water temp fluccuates, the only problem with warm water like this is that it in incapable of holding much disolved oxygen so if you see your fish swimming or hanging at the surface (especially the bigger fish) then you need an air line in the water as they are suffering. Oxygenating plants TAKE oxygen from the water at night so beware of that.

Your pond contains 1245.78 imperial gallons (excluding any filters you may have) so it shouldnt change too much for the fish to cope with. Koi dont like temp changes of 4 degrees or more in any given 24 hours, goldfish are more adapable to water temp changes.
If too many water temp changes occurr then the fish get stressed and this activates any inherrant diseases they may be carrying and you get sick fish and a sick pond. :(

A raised pond will always have more fluccuations because its above ground and in the ground then the ground would help stabelise the temp.

My pond temps right now at 7.30 am are; Koi pond 5000 gallons 16c, wildlife pond 500 gallons 12c, and goldfish pond 500 gallons 13c, hospital tank 250 galons ( a perfect metric ton for meds) is 11c.

The diffentiation between wildlife ( more surface area) and goldfish pond is due to the shape of them and the hospital tank is less volume.

I do expect the water temps to rise as the sun comes out.

Im lucky in that I have a nifty little laser gadget that I point at the water and it takes the water temp.

I have noticed the temps have dropped back down now and my plants are growing like mad.

I just could'nt believe the pond was nearly as warm as my old tropical fish tank I used to have.

Ishard
