Hi  :D

Just wondered what I can use as a cabbage collar as I haven't been able to buy some. I think I have read that some old carpet or cardboard would do. What about fleece? Would I need two circles each with a split to the middle?

Thanking you.

Some people use Carpet underlay or roofing felt.

I think fleece would be too thin!

I never use them since I started using armillatox.

I always think they make the ideal habitat for slugs.

I use collars I made from a bit of old capilliary matting. It is soft like felt so doesn't restrict the growth, and seems to stay well in place. Plus you can reuse it year after year! ;D
If it's not pouring with rain, I'm either in the garden or at the lottie! Probably still there in the rain as well TBH....🥴

Hi Tee Gee,

Thanks for the advice. Seems a logical thing that the collars would be nice rest areas for slugs!  How do you use the armillatox? As a spray on the soil before planting or regular spraying of the crops?

Deb P - would that be similar to the old carpet underfelts or fibre mats used in hanging baskets?

I'm trying to really protect my first crop of brassicas from the horrors that have been told on the forum.

Yes, I think it is similar to that, it is green felt, soft and about 3mm thick. I haven't noticed it being a slug haven but as I use nematodes and Ferramol based pellets I don't seem to get many now....famous last words!

I would guess most garden centres.

The reason I am not certain is I buy most of my garden supplies wholesale    (garden centres are too expensive for me)

I have found this on line; http://tinyurl.com/5pdlsk perhaps that will help.

By the way it might appear to be expensive but it is a multi use product so from that point of view it saves you buying other products to do similar things.

A litre bottle usually does me around two-three seasons.

Wear gloves and a mask when using Armillatox as it contains formaldehyde and that stuff is designed to soak into your skin, ask any undertaker!

It is also a carcinogen.
