Patrick - why don't you consider ex battery hens?  They are only 50p each (donation) and they will be back in lay pretty soon and need to be given a life!

They are roughly 18 months old so should lay for a few years yet.

They have never seen natural daylight, grass, or even been able to flap their wings.

There is a site called Battery Hen Welfare Trust on t'internet.

Good luck with whatever you choose!

Does anyone else on your allotment have any? Maybe they'd sell you some - or swap?

teresa

Battery hens is a good idea, or you could by from day olds to point of lay prices vary.
A lot of breeders sell eggs for hatching on Ebay, check if any are close to you. you could pick up some point of lay or younger.
Its great seeing so many breeds of hens.

i have emailed the bhwt just gonna have to wait to here back. i phoned a few places today just incase i couldnt get any ex bat hens. and the cost of a point of lay hybred hen is about £10 OMG  :o

yeah a people has some on the allotment. if worst comes i will ask them if they wana swap or sum thing.

Really hope you are able to get some ex batts patrick as Old bird has suggested. You will be helping the hens to have a much better way of life and they will repay you with some wonderful eggs......
On the Battery Hen Welfare Trust whilst having a browse around I noticed they suggested an 6 x 4 shed would house up to 12 - 15 hens.... this then got me to thinking about your other thread asking about chicken housing... could you not lay your hands on an old second hand shed that you could do up for your hens to be???

Where we live they are £10 each now at point of lay.  I have 6 at 1 year old now.  I only get 3 eggs daily from them, sometimes only 2.  My 6 white leghorns give me 5-6 eggs daily.
