Allotments 4 All

Hi all,

This is my first year using Jiffy 7s and I have to say I'm pretty impressed with them so far, having sown Chillies and Tomatoes in them. My seedlings seem to be growing away very happily in them.

Anyways, I've sown a number of squash and pumkin seeds in Jiffys too (I think they were the 38 mm ones) and most have germinated. How long should I wait before potting the seedlings on and what size of pots would I be best potting them into? Should I just pot them into a big pot - say 5 or 6 inchess or should I go with a smaller one and gradually increase the size as they grow?

I usually pot on when I see roots and then only into the next size up, I think in your case 3 inch pots , don't like to swamp the littluns!

My first time with Jiffys as well. Out of 6 pumpkins only 1 failed to germinate i have popped it to a warmer area thinking it needs more heat. The others i have popped at 2nd leaf stage into pots 1" bigger and in 2 weeks i will begin the hardening off stage and pop into bigger pots again.

I agree with markfield rover, one of the reasons given not to pot on into too large a pot is to keep the compost fresh, as until the roots reach the compost it is not used but will have been constantly watered.

Yep i only repotted mine as they were rooting into each other ;)
