Hi All,

I bought a pack of shallot sets from B&Q just becasue they were in front of me when i walked past and were cheap but i am not sure what i actually do with them!

Do i break them up like individual garlic cloves? And, do i take the skin off?

Embarrassingly basic but best to ask and get it right!

Leave them whole, 6 inches apart, tips just below surface... leave the skins on too! Nothing embarrassing about asking something you don't know!

I had a question about shallots actually (hijack the thread!!)
I planted Jelmor (the long thin type) and I was wondering - there was one shallot for each set - does the shallot just grow bigger (was already quite big) or does it split into a few bulbs??
2012 - Snow in February, non-stop rain till July. Blight and rot are rife. Thieving voles cause strife. But first runner beans and lots of greens. Follow an English allotment in urban France: http://roos-and-camembert.blogspot.com

The bulb splits into several bulbs so let them do their own thing. When they are ripe save some of the best ones for next years crop

Another tip I read about growing Shallots is to snip the whispy straw tops off with scissors before planting the bulbs to reduce the chance of birds pulling them up.
