We have a packet of Big Max Pumpkin seeds. We are planning on planting these just at the edge of our covered area.

Has anyone grown these before? If so, how big do they grow (the packet isn't clear on the subject) and do they taste okay  :)

Hi Ant

We grew them for Halloween in 06 we had one off each plant - I removed the others as we were aiming for BIG, achieved fairly large but not humunguous.

Not impressed with the taste but a great big orange pumpkin for carving.

These are definately not nice eating pumpkins, they are simply Jack o Lanterns

I was not growing for size more quantity as i was swapping pumpkins for horse poo :)

cheers all  :)

As I said, they will be planted next to the covered area, so with an 8 foot spread they should help block out a bit of light where the gaps in the plastic are. Hopefully they will pinch some nutrients from the pesky bindweed too.

The packet said they were good in compote or pickled sweet and sour, which kind of gave away the fact they taste a bit rubbish  :-\

If I use it for carving then fair enough, either way it will be fun growing them  ;D

they dont need to be sown (start in peat pot) till march. So you need to dig a hole 1ftx1ft and at least 2ft deep.

Fill the hole 2/3 with horse manure and att compost on top this will provide all the hungry needs.
