My white leghorn has just started laying and she would of been ready in Nov/Dec. I was thinking Spring so i'm happy she has started, little eggs so I hope they get bigger. Yours should be anytime now but look at today its so dark for during the day.

There's so many things that can affect egg-laying.  Sometimes a sudden hot/cold/dry/wet spell can interrupt the laying.
At this time of year its the day length - with luck they will start laying as the days start getting longer/lighter.

With older birds, a moult can stop them laying for several weeks too.

I always take the view that a bird contains a set amount of eggs and they will all come out eventually - just keep looking after them.

I am getting around 10 daily from 12 hens. One breed started 4 weeks later than I had anticipated, the other was about 7 weeks late.

Point of lay does not neccessarily mean they will lay the day you take them home. Mine moulted just at the point of lay so it delayed them slightly. Cold, wet  weather can also delay laying by up to a month!

The white leghorn hen lays almost daily for 5 years or more, an average of 280-300 LARGE eggs per hen per annum. At the moment my 6 white leghorns are laying one each daily, without fail. They were born in April but did not start to lay until 24 weeks. Most books etc. state the average hen starts laying at approximately 20 weeks but some can be as late as 28 weeks. My BlackRocks were this late.

Thankyou all for replying,
what colour eggs are white leghorns and black rock please most of my girls are hybrids apart from the six new ones i think they are whynots or something like that or Brahma's but not to sure i forgot as soon as i got them home,, plus i have one cream legbar she is very funny , i have nicknamed her roadrunner as she runs so fast she has a bent toe going the wrong way. i haven't put them all together yet as i thought that i will not now if they'd started laying if i do

White eggs from the leghorns and brown eggs from the blackrocks. Hens eggs will continue to get larger until the hen reaches the age of 30 weeks. Whatever size the eggs are at this time is the size they will remain.

If your hens start laying, then you put them together with the others - it could upset the balance a little and stop them laying again for another few days. When mixing hens they will always squabble for a day or two to regain the title of top dog... (top hen ;D)

The price guide is in my previous post. This is all the information on BlackRock hens. The link at the bottom of the website gives details of the only suppliers in the country.

I bought 6 point of lay, Black Rock Pullets in mid September 2006. They have not stopped laying yet! They moulted late 2007 but kept laying thro out, never less than 2 aday. I am now picking between 2 and 5 a day. I would highly recommend them to anyone.
