From what I've read now, someone in Canada says that Hardnecks need a frost to start sprouting. Softnecks are more likely to rot if planted earlier... The Italian chap on our site planted his white ones in Feb this year, and had a huge harvest of massive bulbs. So I'd say (based on research, not experience) that you're still fine if you're planting the right type now!

They should be fine if you plant now.

Hi there,

I planted mine about 6 weeks ago and they are only now starting to pop out. I got some pink garlic cloves from a french market that came to town and thought that I would try that - also popped my elephant garlic at the same time and nothing yet.

So no worries.  I am going to give it a bit of a weeding as some grass is starting to pop out as well and then give it a wood leaf mulch from leaves saved from two years ago.

If you can't be a good example -- then you'll just have to be a horrible warning....

Yay!!! Just got back from the 'lotment - where several little garlics have shoots about half an inch above the soil... so that's encouraging. Note to self - patience is a virtue!

Mine all have shoots showing - but remember that Garlic likes to have some really cold weather before it gets going - and then a lot of the activity will be below ground - lots of nice strong roots to get it anchored!

So be patient - it will grow - if not - watch out fpr mice with stinky breath!!!!  LOL

LOL - it's sodding rats with me. My neighbour is a bit of a skip ferret, and his plot looks like a junkyard. Because it is a junkyard. I saw a rat running from mine to his the other day - then found loads of my overwintering bb's have gone & they've been munching on the JA's.
