Allotments 4 All

My caulis have been ok upto now but yesterday i saw one was wilting and i thought nothing of it but today about 3 or 4 more have wilted too. They are looking very sad indeed. They get plenty of water so its not that. Any idea what could be up?

I do not know whether my soil is acid, alkali, or neutral and i have heard that they do not like acid soil so would wrong soil ph coause this effect, but i would have thought i would of had problems from the start??

Lift one and have look at the root you may have Cabbage Root Fly. If its that then you will see little white maggots in the stem

yep just pulled the worst one quite  few maggots eating into the root stem. Also a few red insects around aswell :-\ :-\ :-\ how do i get rid or are they only fit for the bin now?

I would lift them taking as much of the root soil as possible and burn them. As young plants will die older plants will grow slowly and wont heart.

Will they affect any of my other veg e.g. carrots spuds, leeks, sweetcorn etc???

No It should no bother any other veg than brassica,s see iff you can find some thing to make disc with an place them round the base of the plants IE carpet, underfelt roofing felt ets

ok will make discs for the next lot. Does any one know how long i have to wait now untill i can plant more cabbages/caulis in the same spot?? Also how do the big growers prevent infestation by these little critters?? I would of thought that putting discs around each plant would be too much hassle.
